2019 Update: The 4th season of Blogchatter Ebook Carnival is live here. If you’ve ever dreamed of becoming a published author, now is your chance! This year I am joining a truly remarkable group of authors as a mentor for the Blogchatter Ebook Carnival. If you have any questions about self-publishing, feel free to reach out to me at @babyandbeyondin

I take on the Baton of Blogchatter EBook Carnival from Manas whose ebook ‘The Contemplation of a Joker‘ is also part of the mix.

About Manas’s ebook: The book is a compilation of some of his blogs from his website which belong to the Personal and Humour genre.

“If you have built castles in the airyour work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them” ~ Henry David Thoreau

I will never forget the moment – 22nd May 2018, 3:50pm. The moment when I officially became a published author.

Publishing my first ebook “Diary of a Baby” has been life-changing in ways I never expected. Though the idea of writing a book was probably always on my bucket list, my castle-in-the-air, but I had never given much thought to building a foundation under it. When I started out blogging, there was never a plan of publishing a book, that is until I heard about the Blogchatter Ebook Carnival. Then, thanks to the Blogchatter community and the power of self-publishing, I had written, edited and published my very first book “Diary of a Baby” in about 45 days. Within 2 weeks after the launch, the book had crossed 600 downloads and was rated 4.8 on Goodreads. It was surreal to say the least.

About my Book “Diary of a Baby”:

Diary of a Baby is all about looking at life from the eyes of a baby. I am sure as new parents, at some point or the other we have all wondered what exactly is going on inside our baby’s mind. What must the baby really be thinking about during all those colicky nights, teething, crawling for the first time, first day of playschool etc.?

In my book, I have tried to present a candid and witty take on life from a baby’s perspective written in the form of diary entries. Each entry is followed by an interpretation of that phase of the baby’s life with anecdotes from my own parenting experiences.

Here’s how Blogchatter Ebook Carnival and publishing my first book changed my life:

My writing improved:

I evolved as a writer. In fact I can see the evolution even from the first chapter to the last chapter. I think that was the best part about publishing the book as a consolidation of the 26 posts from the A to Z challenge. Usually when an author publishes a book, the whole book is published at one go and so there is little scope to gauge readers’ feedback and incorporate it (probably in future editions much down the line). With the A to Z challenge, it was as good as publishing one chapter a day, getting feedback on it from actual readers, understanding what’s working and what is not and incorporating that into the next chapter. So I can definitely see a gradual maturity coming into my writing.

I connected with other parents:

The most gratifying part of the experience has been the overwhelming response I received from so many parents saying they resonated with my book. Some were going through the same phase as they were reading it and felt like they weren’t alone in it, while others were reminiscing about the times their kids were younger and reliving those joyous days through my writing. I was able to build these connections through my book. It never NEVER gets old when someone tells you how much they enjoyed your book. No matter how many times you hear it, it still gives you a high.

I earned credibility:

Publishing a parenting book gave me credibility as a parenting blogger too. Parents trust my writing more. I am not just another mom with a blog but a published parenting author. I can already see the impact on my blog’s reach in just 2 months.

I learned so much and more importantly, I learned so much about myself

When you are self-publishing, you are everything – the writer, editor, cover designer, formatter, publisher, marketing, PR. There were so many things I had to learn about publishing a book.

Of course, my family, the Blogchatter community and ebook mentors were there to guide me, give suggestions and feedback, but the final decision was all mine and the repercussions would be faced only by me. When I had no one else to turn to, I learned to trust my instincts and believe in myself. While writing every night after managing a job and a toddler, Iearned the level of my perseverance, endurance

While writing every night after managing a job and a toddler, Iearned the level of my perseverance, endurance and ability to go without sleep ( 😉 )

I learned to market myself. I have never been too good with marketing myself. I believe in putting my work out there and letting it speak for itself. But you cannot expect readers to discover your book on their own, especially without the backing of a publishing house who does the marketing for you. I had to let go of my inhibitions and put myself out there. I went all out marketing it on social media, Whatsapp groups, talking about to with whomever I met. I had to request readers to write reviews. It was completely out of my comfort zone and completely worth it.

I felt validated:

2 years ago, I gave up a full time job and a 7 figure salary and I started writing. I always questioned my decisions and questiomed where I was going. Was my career officially over? Every since I published my book, with every download, every rating and every review I feel validated that I am on the right track and doing what I was meant to do in my life.

It boosted my self confidence:

Have you ever checked something off your bucket list? Then you would know how I feel. It’s so empowering. I feel more self confident and ready to take on any challenge.

I pass on the Baton of Blogchatter EBook Carnival to Rashmi whose ebook ‘Be Wild Again’ is also part of the mix. About Rashmi‘s ebook: Be Wild Again is a mirror to show how beautiful, powerful & amazing a woman is A call to break the barriers of patriarchy, embrace freedom and accept one’s self. It is about freedom and adventure. Not just about breaking the rules but making rules for oneself.
