All About Christmas | Book Review | Baby & Beyond

We celebrate Christmas at my sister’s place each year and it is all about family, feasting and of course, presents. This year Baby N is old enough to realize when something special is happening, so I was looking for interesting ways to introduce the concept of Christmas to him.

As with introducing any new concept, the best way to do it is through books and activities. So when I read about this children’s book “All About Christmas”, I just had to get it for myself. Here is my review:

About the Book “All About Christmas”

The book is divided into 4 sections – The Nativity story, the Santa Claus story, the tale of Evergreen trees, followed by stickers and craft sheets. Each story has a set of linked activities as well.

The Nativity Story:

This tells the story of the birth of Jesus Christ in simple language with beautiful, colourful illustrations. It is a really interesting and engaging way to teach children about why we celebrate Christmas.

Activities Included: Colouring, sticker collages and counting. There is also a page to recreate the Nativity scene using stickers.

Listening to the story about the first Christmas and then telling it to his babies :’)

This section is all about Saint Nicholas and how he came to be known as Santa Claus. It gives the story behind why we hang stockings over the fireplace on the night before Christmas (even I didn’t know this one!). For most children, Santa Claus – and in fact Christmas itself – is all about the presents, but this story introduces them to the real spirit behind the tradition of gifting. Another really fun chapter in this section is the interview with Santa Claus, which will make kids believe that he is indeed a real, living person.

Activities Included: Colouring, countdown to Christmas, sorting gifts, sticker collage and a page to write a letter to Santa

The Tale of Evergreen Trees:

A sweet story on why the trees are evergreen with a great moral at the end.

Activities Included: Decorate the Christmas tree with ornament stickers

Craft Sheets:

The last section includes Christmas themed colouring and craft sheets. There are Nativity character cone dolls which you can use to make a 3D nativity scene, a bunting or Christmas tree ornaments. There is also a cube ornament which children can colour and a Naughty or Nice sheet which parents can mark as a fun activity to encourage good behaviour.

My Review

  • Story: The book is a very interactive and engaging way to introduce children to the stories behind Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ, how Saint Nicholas came to be known as Santa Claus, why we hang stockings above the fireplace etc.
  • Print & Illustrations: The illustrations are bright, colourful and attractive. The font is clear and easy for children to read. The craft sheets are on thicker card paper which makes the cutouts stand well.
  • Activities: Every section includes very creative, hands-on activities that reinforce the theme while also providing fun and learning. A range of skills are engaged including reading, writing, colouring, sorting, counting, arranging, sequencing, cutting and pasting, imagination and creativity. However, most of the activities would require an adult to be along with the child, especially for smaller children.

  • Stickers: There are over 400 fact the author has been thoughtful enough to put in duplicate stickers for many activities in case one of them tears, or if you want to repeat the activity outside the book. There are also some extra stickers that you can use on your gifts and cards.
  • Age Group: Although the author recommends that the book is suitable for ages 3-10, I would say that in my opinion the language would be suited for children 5 and up. Though the activities can be enjoyed by younger kids as well. My almost-2 year old is already enjoying decorating the Christmas tree and sticking cotton on Santa’s beard.

His favourite activity is decorating the Christmas tree with ornament stickers. Of course his favourite sticker is the star!
