Most of us want to be more physically fit, but are just not sure where to start. With our hectic mom life, many of us don’t find the time or energy to invest in our own health and fitness. But the truth is, you don’t need to invest tons of money and time into your fitness. Every little effort counts.

I myself have been working out for just 3-4 hours a week since the last 4 months and I can already feel the difference in that I feel more energetic, stronger, fitter and most importantly, I have more stamina to keep up with my toddler. Here are my simple tips to get and stay fit as a busy mom.

1. Set a time for yourself and commit to it:

Find time in your schedule when you can give yourself 30 mins to an hour. It could be before your children wake up, when they are at school or classes or go downstairs to play. My time is when my son is napping in the afternoon. I take an hour to sneak off to the gym and I am back before he even wakes up. Make sure you commit to this time. If you are the type to make a daily schedule or to-do list, make a point to note down your workout as one of the to-dos. Trust me, you will be less likely to skip it then.

2. Find a workout that works for you:

Every body type is different and everyone has a different preference. Find an exercise type that suits you, your schedule, your body and leaves you wanting to go back to it again – yoga, zumba, gym, fitness DVD at home, running at the park or on the treadmill at home, aerobics, sports. Remember, this time is not only for your physical fitness but also a mental break from your daily routine. So make sure you are doing something that you really enjoy.

3. Find some fit-mom inspiration:

Look up the hashtags #fitmom #fitmama #fitmominspire #momswholift etc. You will find tons of inspirational stories of women who have been on a similar journey as the one you are starting out on. Find accounts that resonate with you and follow them for some daily motivation. Some fit moms I follow myself are:

Mish Magik – my inspiration for when I want to push myself at the gym

Fitmama_Jackie – incredible workout-at-home transformation story

Mommytosiabear – love her workout routines which involve her baby

Mamatoivana – marathoner mom

Aeshas_musings – her crossfit stories are goals (check out her highlights)

4. Involve the kids:

If you checked out the above profiles, you will notice that for moms, a workout routine does not always look like an hour at the gym or spin class. These moms have found creative mom-life-adapted workout routines that often include their kids too.

I sometimes practice yoga while N is playing in the same room and often he comes and joins me, trying to imitate the postures. And when he was younger, he was the perfect weight for some lifting too! With older kids you can take them out for a swim or play a sport with them.

Not only will you be spending quality time with your little ones, you no longer need to worry about finding a nanny or caregiver so that you can work out. Most importantly, you will be setting a powerful example of living a fit and healthy lifestyle and getting them started young.

5. If you can’t seem to find the time:

Don’t worry, every little bit counts. Ditch the car and head out for a walk (even if it is to the grocery store). These days I put N in his stroller and walk around whenever I need to run any errands.

Take the stairs instead of the lift. Don’t fret the day the help doesn’t turn up. Doing chores around the house is actually great cardio! Have you ever run around behind your kid at a playground or followed them in and out of tunnels at the play area? Hey, that counts as cardio too! Try to build in as much movement and physical activity as you can in your daily routine.

6. Find your tribe:

Everything is easier with a tribe! Having a workout buddy is the best way to stay motivated and challenge yourself, but even if you don’t have one (like I don’t), you can still find a group of friends or even an online fitness group to share your fitness journey with. They need not workout with you, but can be there to motivate you on days you feel like skipping, to share every small joy and success with and to overcome challenges together.

7. Take up a fitness challenge:

Just like your tribe, fitness challenges are a great way to find a community and stay motivated. Watch Facebook closely as you will find a number of fitness challenges starting out every month. I myself had hosted a fitness challenge #kickstartfitnesswithbandbEvery participant committed to a goal at the start of the month. Each week we posted about how our week had gone, our achievements and the challenges we faced and together the community helped each other overcome these challenges and stay motivated and on track (the prizes from our generous sponsors helped with the motivation too 😉 )

My husband and I also use the 30 Day Fitness Challenge – Workout at Home app which motivates us to stay on track and gradually increase the intensity of workouts.

8. Reward yourself:

Don’t be hard on yourself. Set simple, achievable goals and reward yourself when you accomplish them. A cheat meal, a rest day at home with the kids, some retail therapy will go a long way in helping you stay motivated and on track. I push myself through the week and give myself a break on the weekend. That is my tiny reward to myself every week.

Yes exercising is important. It may be difficult initially, once we get into a routine things become easy. Your suggestion of walking in stead of driving is great. So is the idea of finding inspiration from fellow travellers. I liked this post.

  4. Anshu said on September 2, 2018 11:10 am:

Great tips Mahak! More often than not new mothers think running after their toddlers is all the workout they need, well though it’s helpful, it’s not enough. Brisk walking, jogging, running, cardio exercises in the gym, weight training, functional training, yoga – either of them done consistently helps. For 2 years after my daughter was born, I hesitated to join gym, but then I realised I didn’t have much stamina. Now it’s been 5 years and going to gym is like going to the temple for me.

    1. Baby & Beyond said on September 3, 2018 2:38 pm:

I feel like my story is exactly the same! For 2 years I thought I am getting enough exercise playing with my toddler, until 1 day I realized I could no longer keep up with him. A 2 year old had more stamina than I did! That was my wakeup call to start my fitness journey and get back to the gym. I hope our stories help other new moms too.

These are amazing tips which are paratical and doable. Regular Exercise helped not only my body but my mind. Being a mom gets stressful, managing all the running around and food requirements of kids etc . We need to release the stress. There is no better way then to exercise. And you have rightly said anything that works for you is great. A walk with your kid in the garden, taking stairs instead of lift .. such small steps helps as well.
And thanks a lot for the mention. I am glad my fitness routine would inspire other moms to take that step towards healthy living.
