Keys, Switches, Boxes and Other Baby Toys - Diary of a 9 Months Old Baby | Baby & Beyond

This post is part of a series of posts I am writing titled Diary of a Baby chronicling the candid confessions of a baby from 0 to 2 years old.

You can read the previous post in the series here:  Jaws – Diary of a Teething Baby

Age: 10 months old

Dear Diary,

My favourite toys these days are switches. They are these magical buttons on the wall that control the whole house. I kid you not! Just one tap on the switch somewhere and a light somewhere else comes on. Or the fan goes off. It’s completely addictive! The adults play his game all day long but they don’t like it when I play along. Hmpf!

And then right next to the switches are these little black holes. I don’t know what they do but they draw me towards them. I tried to investigate these black holes one day and next thing you know they’ve all been taped up. Why? What is it about these holes that the adults don’t want me to find out? I bet they lead into some other alternate realm where the switches are the overlords and control all the humans. Just like a sci-fi movie. Not that I know anything about sci-fi. Or movies for that matter. I am not allowed to watch the black box that shows all these moving pictures. No I was not secretly watching it the other day while pretending to be asleep in Mamma’s lap.

Anyway, while we are on the subject of switches, let me just put this out there, in case any adult ever happens to read this diary (yes I know you spy on my diary Mamma!), because I have seen people bringing me all these fancy-shmancy toys that I really have little patience for. So in public interest, I am hereby listing down all the things babies actually want to play with (you can think me later):

Baby toys we actually want:

1. Keys: Yes, remember when I was a teeny baby and you used to jingle keys in front of me to entertain me? Well that is going to come back and bite you you-know-where because I now find keys to be the most fascinating toy. So many keys to jingle jangle, so many opportunities to unlock hidden treasures, so much potential to hide them and then watch everyone hunt for them. And then of course mouth them when I’m bored of playing

2. Remotes: Remotes are like switches on steroid. All the colourful little buttons to press…the opportunities are endless. And don’t even think about removing the batteries before handing it over to me…I know a dummy when I see one!

3. Empty boxes: Because the box is always way more fun than whatever comes in it. Oh and don’t even get me started on those little bags of air that come in the boxes. Those should be called “little bags of joy”! Hey, your generation had bubblewrap, ours has air pillows!

Oh look..Mamma bought new toys for me! Let me just leave them safely there on the table and play with this interesting looking cardboard box instead. Oh and packaged air!

4. Utensils: Junior Masterchef in the making here. Just practicing some skills and entertaining you with the pleasant sounds of empty utensils banging against each other

5. Toilet paper roll: Why are you even surprised about this one!

6. A pack of wipes: I mean come on! They are just sitting there asking to be pulled out. And then when I pull out one, another one magically comes and takes its place and of course I have to pull that one too. Its like a gift that keeps on giving

7. Telephone: Such a fascinating invention! And more buttons to press

Yes I would much rather pretend to be talking on this phone than stacking colourful rings as per their size…duh!

8. Paper: Newspaper, envelopes, books, receipts…any paper, I’m not choosy. As long as I can crush it I’m happy

9. Buckets: Empty buckets are so much fun! But filled with water they are even better

10. Accessories and makeup: Clips, pins, bands, necklaces, bracelets, lipstick, eyeliner…the works! That stuff can keep me busy for hours!

I’ve struck GOLD!

11. Broom and dustpan: I just like to keep my surroundings clean

Now this is by no means a comprehensive list and is subject to change at any time without prior notice, based on my moods. Remember how crazy I was about mirrors? Yeah that is so passe!

Oh doorbell just rang. I hope its the Amazon guy with more boxes. Catch you later!
