Jaws - Diary of Teething Baby

This post is part of a series of posts I am writing titled Diary of a Baby chronicling the candid confessions of a baby from 0 to 2 years old.

You can read the previous post in the series here: I Like to Move It Move It – Diary of an 8 Months Old Baby

Dear Diary,

Strange things are happening these days. I have an irresistible urge to chew on everything, be it the my toys, the kitchen towel, spoons, my fingers, mamma’s hair, or even her slippers. I don’t know what it is but I have this constant annoying feeling, almost like an itch in my mouth and gnawing at things relieves it a bit. What is happening to me??

Hey Diary,

Update…you know all that chewing and gnawing I was talking about…Now I know what’s going on. I’ve got these white ivories erupting inside my mouth. I feel like a baby shark! It hurts like crazy, I feel feverish and my nose runs all the time. Its yuck! I can’t even sleep, I just want to cuddle Mamma and drink mum-mum all day because that’s the only thing that makes me feel better.

I don’t even feel like eating anything (OK correction – I feel like chewing on everything, other than food that it). But I do like watermelon, cucumber, carrot sticks and my favourite rusk toast. These things seem to bring me some relief at least.

You know what the really rubbish part is? I heard the adults discussing that these are baby teeth and I will lose them all in a few years. Like what??! I have to go through all this pain and then these darn teeth will just fall off?! Why is life so unfair to babies?!! Ugh.

– Baby Shark (Doo doo doo doo doo)

If you are a toddler-parent, I challenge you to read the last line  Baby Shark (Doo doo doo doo doo) – without breaking into the song. Haha…Gotcha! And now I’ve got the most annoying song in the world stuck in your head too. Small sadistic joys of parenting *evil grin*

But teething…*sigh*. In our case, the symptoms went on for months without any visual evidence of a single tooth. Right from the fifth month onwards, every time Baby N had a fever, runny nose, sleepless night, we blamed it on teething. Every time he became irritable or went on a crying spree without any apparent reason, we blamed it on teething. Of course there could very well have been any other reasonable explanation for his crying – such as I gave him a red spoon but he really wanted a blue one, or I stopped him from stuffing his shoes into his mouth, or I fished the car keys out of the safe hiding place he had chosen for them..the toilet seat – well it could be any one of a million reasons, but without any confirmation from him, we assumed it was teething.

All reputable sources from books to apps, mommy groups, grandparents and nosy aunties told us it must be teething. And it worked fine for us to blame this phenomenon because it meant there was a reasonable explanation for all the it wasn’t just because we were awful parents!

Finally at 9 months we spotted the first ivory emerging and it was the slowest and most painful experience of our parenting (until then…bear in mind we hadn’t encountered the terrible twos yet at that point).

P.S. At 2 years now his molars are coming in and yes we still blame all fussiness on teething (pro parenting tip alert *wink wink*)

I remember my daughter chewing up her toys like crazy. One ear of a blue rabbit was a fav! It became soft from all the chewings by the time she was done! LOL

Memories became fresh with this post

We all sail in the same boat. No matters how many teethers I got for my kiddos, they loved towels and fingers(not theirs) more.

Not their finger..haha! Thankfully we didn’t have that here

I remember those days! My husband stayed home to watch our daughter (he was Mr. Mom) and called me at work to tell me I had to come home because she was teething. What? He was with her all day. Give her a frozen cloth and baby aspirin.
