Hair Detox with The Moms Co Shampoo and Conditioner | Baby & Beyond

I have dry frizzy hair, which Mumbai’s humid climate and pollution only makes worse. Since as long as I can remember, I have been on the lookout for the perfect shampoo and conditioner to tame my hair. For many years I used only natural shampoos, but switched back to a chemical shampoo because the frizz was becoming unmanageable.

The Moms Co Promise:

Recently I was contacted to try out The Moms Co shampoo and conditioner which claims to be sulphate-free, paraben-free, mineral oil-free and free from any harmful chemicals such as Phenoxyethanol, DEA/TEA, PEGs, and more.

The products are dermatologically approved to be non irritant and safe for use on sensitive skin. They are also certified Toxic-Free and Made Safe by Safe Cosmetics Australia.

Why all the fuss about sulphate?

While I have hearing about the sulphate-free (no-poo) shampoo revolution for years, I admit I was never really aware of what SLS is or why it is harmful. A little research led me to understand that SLS or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, is a surfactant which creates the lather in most shampoos and other personal care products. Many popular shampoo brands use SLS. A common misconception we have is that the more the lather, the better cleansed our hair is getting. On the contrary, SLS has a corrosive effect and strips the hair of its natural oils and moisture. Prolonged usage can also irritate the skin.

This was like a lightbulb moment for me and explained why my hair is always dry despite regular oiling and conditioning. It also made sense that I had to keep going for expensive chemical protein treatments to get some life back into my dull and dry hair.

So when The Moms Co approached me to try out their “hair detox” bundle comprising the Moms Co shampoo and conditioner, I jumped at the opportunity.

But wait, mineral oil is good for us right?

Wrong! This is another misconception that I had, probably like many of you out there. I think the confusion stems from the word “mineral” which we assume is great for our bodies. Mineral oil is used in many personal care products because it is a cheap lubricant, however neither does it infuse the scalp with nutrients nor hydrate it. Some studies also link mineral oils to severe health risks. I am not sure of the authenticity of these claims, but when natural alternatives such as coconut oil are available, I would rather not take the risk with mineral oils.

The Moms Co Shampoo and Conditioner Packaging

Coming back to The Moms Co, I just loved the clean and muted packaging. The white, gold and blue colour combination looks really elegant. The only grouse I have is the individual cardboard box for each bottle which seems wasteful. I guess it is there so that the product information booklet can be added inside, but I’m wondering if there was any way to avoid that extra box.

The Moms Co Natural Protein Shampoo

Contains:

Hydrolyzed silk protein – locks in moisture, adds shine and prevents breakage

Hydrolyzed wheat protein – strengthens hair and adds volume

Beetroot extract – nourishes hair follicles and prevents hairfall

Coconut based cleansers – cleanses without chemicals

Vitamin B5 – essential vitamin for hair growth

My Experience:

The documentation in the packaging had already prepared me to expect a thin, colourless liquid. Also as expected, the shampoo did not lather much. This is typical of SLS free shampoos. The documentation also warns that the hair may feel dry after the first wash. Though honestly after using the conditioner I did not find this, but I am mentioning it here so you do not get alarmed if your hair feels dryer. It is just the shampoo doing its job, stripping your hair of silicones and wax and returning it to its natural state.

After the first wash itself, the hair felt smoother and completely detangled and its the same after successive washes as well.

The shmapoo has a sharp fragrance, but it does not linger in the hair after you wash it off.

Price and Availability:
200ml bottle is available for INR 429 at Amazon and The Moms Co website.

The Moms Co Natural Protein Conditioner

Contains:

Argan oil – prevents hair loss and dryness

Hydrolyzed silk protein – locks in moisture, adds shine and prevents breakage

Hydrolyzed wheat protein – strengthens hair and adds volume

Murumuru seed butter – nourishes and retains moisture

Beetroot extract – nourishes hair follicles and prevents hairfall

Natural Vitamin E – repairs damage to hair follicles

Vitamin B5 – essential vitamin for hair growth

Orbignya kernel seed oil – soothes itchy and dry scalp

My Experience:

My hair definitely felt moisturized and smoother for 2-3 days after using the conditioner. There was a visible shine to the hair. Frizz was more manageable, though I noticed that it could not tame my baby hair and flyaways. Though to be fair, I am yet to find a conditioner that is able to do that.

The conditioner does not have any particular fragrance.

Price and Availability:
200ml bottle is available for INR 429 at Amazon and The Moms Co website.

Note: You can also buy the detox kit with both shampoo and conditioner at a discounted price of INR 795 from Amazon.

Final Verdict

I definitely recommend the hair detox with The Moms Co shampoo and conditioner because it life my hair feeling smooth and nourished, without any of the harsh chemicals.

Such a detailed review. I loved the honesty with which you have shared your experience. I have tried their shampoo & conditioner and there’s no doubt that they work so much better than the chemical laden products. I find the price a bit on the upper side since I have long voluminous hair & I finished their bottle in just 4 washes. But yes people with hair problems should definitely try it, it works really well.
