Few of Our Favourite Things - 9-12 Months

We are back with our “favourite things” series! The last few months have been all about raising an independent toddler…independently playing, reading, eating, drinking, walking, even swimming. Here are all our favourite things that we have been loving at ages 12-15 months.

1. Peppa’s Super Noisy Sound Book – Baby N has been going through phases with his books. Up to 6 months he was all over picture books, 6-9 months was all about touch-and-feel books, 9-12 was about lift-the-flap books and 12-15 has been about sound books. Specifically books with sounds of farm animals, vehicles and everyday sounds from around the house have been his favourite. His absolute favourite for more than a month has been Peppa’s Super Noisy Sound Book. He asks for it at least 5 times a day. He dances to the sound of the bus (he’s got moves strikingly similar to his dad by the way!), points to his teeth at the sound of the toothbrush, giggles along with the sound of the kids laughing, shouts “dada” (grandfather) whenever he hears the phone ring and does incy wincy spider actions to the sound of the rain. So happy that I can leave him alone with this book for 15 mins at least. Enjoying this phase while it lasts before he gets bored of it (hopefully not too soon!)

2. Azafran Organic Crayons – Baby N has been showing interest in art ever since he started daycare (he watches the older children colouring there). But since he is in his ‘mouthing everything’ phase, I was reluctant to give him crayons. The only organic crayons I found online were imported and a whopping Rs.1,600 for a pack of 5. Then I read about Azafran’s organic crayons, went ahead and bought them for just Rs. 200 for a set of 8 and we are loving them. They are bright and colourful, block-shaped for easy gripping. They glide smoothly over paper. The important thing is that they are completely organic, made with waxes of palm and soya, soya butter and food grade colours. So even if Baby N happens to get some in his mouth despite my watchful eye, I need not get all paranoid about it. Of course kids are rarely satisfied with colouring on just paper. Again I need not worry because the colours are completely washable from skin and clothes and wipe off easily from glass and marble surfaces too.

3. Intex Inflatable Float – The best way to beat Mumbai heat is a dip in the pool. Thanks to this float, we can take Baby N along with us and he loves being independent in the pool. He can splash around, kick his legs and wade with his arms. He doesn’t need to hold on to us to move about freely in the pool. The plane design of this particular float adds to the excitement for him too.

4. Mega Bloks Learning Train – These were the first blocks I bought for Baby N when he was about 10 months old. If you have been following my posts, you would know that I prefer activity-based toys rather than battery-operated light-and-sound toys. I bought this toy because I believe that blocks foster thinking, creativity and of course motor skills. I was pleasantly surprised to see that by 12 months Baby N was able to stack the blocks on top of each other and now he tries to build a tower, car, train, giraffe and what not. He doesn’t seem to get bored of it and can play on his own for quite some time as well.

5. Nuby Flip-it Leak-Resistant Thin Straw Bottle – We have been using straw bottles since Baby N was about 7 months old. He took to drinking from a straw instantly, but it inevitably resulted in spilling and leaks and sometimes the water flow would be too fast for him. The worst part though was that he would end up trying to suck as well as blow into the straw, resulting in the water in the bottle getting dirty. I tried a couple of different straw bottles before I found the Nuby Flip-it leak resistant straw bottle which is the only bottle that has worked for us so far. The Nuby bottles are available in attractive, bright colours which made Baby N interested in using them. The straw is thinner than I have seen on other bottles, making it just right for baby’s first straw bottle. The flip cap is easy (Baby N can flip open and close the cap himself) and ensures that the straw stays clean and hygienic. It allows water to flow only in one direction. The best part about it is that it is completely leak resistant. Baby N loves his bottle so much, he never goes anywhere without it. Even when I drop him off and pick him up from daycare, he makes it a point to open his bag and ensure that his bottle hasn’t been left behind!

6. Soft Souls – Yes, here is yet another Soul product that we are in love with! These soft baby shoes are available in breathable cotton and linen in a variety of lovely colours. Their sherpa insole provides soft cushioning for the feet and makes them perfect for indoor use. The suede sole gives grip (so my active toddler can run around without slipping) and withstands wear and tear as well. Easy to slip on with an elastic band that keeps the shoes in place. I wish I had found these earlier on..they would have made perfect first shoes for Baby N as well.
