Horror Story - Diary of a 7 Months Old Baby| Baby & Beyond

This post is part of a series of posts I am writing titled Diary of a Baby chronicling the candid confessions of a baby from 0 to 2 years old.

Age: 7 months old

Sun, sand, surf, swimsuits…Ahh this is the life. Why don’t we live here?

First, Diary, let me give you a couple of quick updates from what’s been happening this month. A couple of weeks ago I gave Mamma a real scare. We were reading books on the bed and she turned away for just a few seconds to pick up another book. It was at that very instant that I had the urge to grab  a rattle lying at the edge of the bed.

Remember how I told you I can roll onto my tummy on my own? Well I can roll back onto my back too. That’s how I move about these days, by rolling from one place to another. So off I went rolling towards the rattle and the next thing I know, I’m over the edge and crash landing onto the floor. All mayhem ensued. There was screaming and crying (only partly by me), someone was rushing for ice, someone was checking my head for injuries, someone was calling the doctor, someone was Googling “baby fall from bed”. I was rushed to the hospital, where thankfully the doctor declared that all was well and no harm was done.

But poor Mamma was a wreck all day. I think she was blaming herself and I’m feeling quite bad about it. She loves me, protects me and cares for me everyday. I wish she wouldn’t be so hard on herself. To make her feel special, I tried extra hard and a few days later I said the word “mamma mamma”. She was over the moon! I can’t tell you how happy it made her!

Anyway back to the sun, sand, surf bit. Yes we are on a family vacation to this paradise called Goa. We just sit around on the beach all day, eating, relaxing and playing in the water. And then we head back to the hotel, sit by the pool and repeat the exact same thing. Ahh…A man could get used to this life. Nothing like a beach vacation to help Mamma and me forget all that drama.

And the best part is having Papa around all day long. Apparently he doesn’t have to go to work in Goa..isn’t that awesome! Now I’m going to go back to sipping my margar..err…mum-mum and enjoying the view. See you soon!

I didn’t write this post to make myself feel better (OK maybe only a part of me did). But the truth is that this is a situation many of us have faced and I know most of us moms have sat and berated ourselves for it. The first time Baby N had a fall, I spent the whole day feeling miserable, crying, calling myself a horrible mother and apologizing to him and my husband. Baby N recovered in a matter of a few minutes (thankfully he wasn’t hurt, just a little in shock), but it took me a few days to recover. But then he fell again. And again. When he started crawling, standing, walking, climbing, running, cycling…he’s had more than a few falls. I’ve realized now that it doesn’t make me a bad mother.

Babies get hurt..that’s how they learn, that’s how their reflexes develop, that’s how their spatial understanding develops, that’s how they understand consequences. And they are resilient too. They move on much faster than we do. So what I wanted to say through this post is…if you are that mom who is in this situation right now, don’t be too hard on yourself. Of course do what needs to be done – ice, bandages, first aid, doctor – but don’t beat yourself up about it. Give yourself a break…We’ve all been through these situations and trust me, there will be more as they grow.
