8 Ideas to Make Children’s Day Special for our Kids

November 10, 2017 Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google+ Raising a Parent

I remember when I was a little girl, Children’s Day was celebrated with great gusto at our school. We would dress up in our fanciest clothes, not have to sit for any classes, get to play lots of games and get showered with gifts and chocolates. So now that I have a child myself, I was thinking about what I can do to make Children’s Day special and memorable for him.

They say that the most valuable thing you can give your child is your time and I couldn’t agree more! So on Children’s Day, lets unleash our own inner child and have a blast with our little ones!

Here are a few activities you can all enjoy together as a family (in fact there are so many fun ideas, I might just celebrate the whole week!).

1. Attend a Children’s Day event:

There are many events planned all across India to celebrate this day, with a lot of fun activities, shows, rides and food stalls for the kids. We will taking N to one such Children’s Day carnival this weekend.

2. Do an art / craft activity together:

N loves colouring and painting, so I am planning some creative activities that we can both enjoy doing together. His favourite is finger painting and bhindi painting, and I am planning to try straw painting which he has never done before. There are tons of activity ideas you can find on Pinterest appropriate for your kids’ ages.

3. Plan an outing:

This is a great occasion to take your child on a trip to a zoo, planetarium, theme park or even a play area. Or even a simple picnic at a park or beach would be so much fun! Just pack up a few snacks and a ball to play with and you are good to go!

4. Cook together:

Older children would certainly enjoy cooking a meal together. Or better yet, involve them in baking a special Children’s Day cake which they later get to cut and eat!

5. Decorate the house:

Make it a special occasion for your child by going all out, decorating the house with balloons, streamers, or anything else you can think of. N’s loves trains, so I have made a train with some coloured chart paper and stuck photos of him from birth till now on it.You can surprise them with it when they return home from school, or you can even involve them in making and putting up the decoration.

6. Call friends over for a playdate:

I’m sure kids would enjoy having some of their friends over for a play date and it will give you a chance to catch up with some mommy friends too.

7. Celebrate the joy of giving:

Use this opportunity to show your children the joy of giving. I will be donating some of N’s clothes and shoes since he is too small to understand this himself. But with older children, you can encourage them to pick out clothes, toys and books they would like to donate to the less fortunate children, or even check with an orphanage if they would be open to allowing your children to visit and interact with the children there.

8. Allow a cheat day:

Though I am very particular about what N eats, I allow a cheat day once in a while on special occasions. He loves chocolate (who doesn’t right!) and since Children’s Day is such a special occasion, I say kuch meetha ho jaaye!

Great reminder to do something to make them feel special. It’s easy to just treat it as any other day. But it is important to pause and spend time and remember how blessed we are as parents for these miracles and Not take anything for granted!
